Arvind Kumar
(1930 - 2021)
Lexicographer, journalist, poet, short story writer, social essayist, art-drama-film critic, and translator.
He is best known for his seminal contribution to Hindi and English-Hindi lexicography. Arvind Kumar’s Samantar Kosh, the first-ever thesaurus in Hindi or any modern Indian language, revolutionized and added a new dimension to lexicography in India and the entire Hindi-using world in the year 1996.
He then went on to create Arvind Lexicon Online the world’s largest bilingual corpus of more than one million English and Hindi expressions that combines the functionality of a dictionary, thesaurus, and language explorer.
All of Arvind’s lexicographical works including the three-volume Penguin English-Hindi-English Thesaurus and Dictionary are based on the Arvind Lexicon database. Arvind's journey has been captured in a documentary film, Shabd Saarthi - Thesaurus Man, and bytes and songs from the film are available for viewing on Arvind's Youtube channel.
